Bodegas Navalon is surrounded by the ancient vineyards of DO Valdepe?as in the heart of Spain.
The bodega has been the passion of the same local family for several generations. It was originally founded at the start of the 20th Century by Don Juan Sánchez, a landowner who decided to build a winery to make his own wine, rather than selling his grapes to others.
Valdepe?as means Valley of Rocks, referring to the special soil, strewn with pebbles and larger stones.
These stones soak up the sun’s rays during the day, and then release their heat during the night. Deep underground, layers of chalk and clay retain water which is vital for refreshing the vines during the intense summer heat.
At an average altitude of 705m above sea level, the vineyards benefit from a dry continental climate with over 2,500 hours of sun and low rainfall, resulting in an ideal microclimate for growing vines.
The stony vineyards of Valdepeñas are found in the centre of Spain, where the continental climate is suited to producing intensely fruity, long-lasting red wines. The grapes were hand-harvested from 30-year-old vines planted on clayey lime soils. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks before the ageing process began in a combination of American, French and Hungarian oak casks with different toasting levels, achieving the complex bouquet and flavours of this exceptional wine. This wine was oak aged for a minimum of 24 months.
Tasting Notes: A dark ruby colour fading to brick red at the edges. The nose has spicy notes of leather and vanilla. Similar complexity on the palate with intense flavours of fruit compote and liquorice leading to a long velvety finish.
Food Match: Serve with hearty stews and casseroles or traditionally with lamb. Cellar for up to 4 years.
A traditional, Spanish, oak-aged Tempranillo, with an intensity of fruit and complexity that is unusual.
The Tempranillo grapes were hand-picked at the optimum point of ripeness from 30-year-old vines in stony Valdepeñas vineyards. The soil is clayey lime and the climate continental - cold winters and hot, dry summers. After fermenting in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for 15 days, the wine is aged in American, French and Hungarian casks with different toasting levels for 12 months.
Tasting Notes: Bright ruby red, mellowing to brick red at the edges. A range of characteristics can be identified on the nose - aromas of fresh red fruit, prunes and cherries, along with notes of coffee, vanilla tobacco and caramel. A classic Reserva style. Well balanced with warm and generous integrated oak on the palate. Earthy, spicy, elegant and fresh.
Food Match: Cellar it for up to 4 years, or enjoy right now with red meats, stews and mature cheese.

The Tempranillo grapes were hand-picked from 30-year-old vines in stony Valdepeñas vineyards. The soil is clayey lime and the climate continental - cold winters and hot, dry summers. Fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 28?C in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine was then matured for at least six months in French and American oak barriques.
Tasting Note: Intense aromas of red fruits with balsamic hints of vanilla and spice. A well-balanced, rounded palate shows similar fruit and vanilla flavours with an intense finish.
Food Match: Enjoy with roast lamb, chicken, hearty casseroles and mature cheeses.
